The effect of group sand tray play on self-esteem of multicultural adolescent

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to exmine the effect of group sand tray play on self-esteem of multicultural adolescent. The first subject is to examine if the play improves the self-esteem of multicultural adolescent and second subject is to exmine if the play affects a verbal expression of multicultural adolescent. The research was targeted to 3 low self-esteemed adolescents with the age of 14 living in Gyeongsangnamdo under the environment of multicultural family which their mother is from foreign countries. The play consists of selt-esteem: security, selfhood, affiliation, mission and competence and each session has 6 steps of creating a world, experiencing and rearranging, therapy, documentation, transition and dismantling the world. The program was conducted twice a week with total 12 sessions and each session was 60 minutes. To see the effect of group sand tray play, the subjects`` pre and post self-esteem was compared by analyzing the quality of their verbal expressions. The results of this study are as follows: First, group sand tray play increased subject``s self-esteem. Second, group sand tray play positive verbal expression of the subjects and decreased negative verbal expressions. Therefore, even though there is limitation to generalize this study, the results show group sand tray play gives positive effects on the improvement of self-esteem of multicultural adolescent.
